Gli mwbqStrawbs sono stato un gruppo musicale mwbgbritannico. La band nacque a Londra nel 1964 come Strawberry Hill Boys (il nome si rifà al mwgaquartiere in cui facevano le prove) e proponeva inizialmente un repertorio mwgqbluegrass, ispirato a Peggy Seeger e mwgwEarl Scruggs.cite-ref-am-1-2[1]cite-ref-cr-2-0[2] I due fondatori sono mwjaDave Cousins, leader del gruppo, cantante e chitarrista, nonché autore della maggior parte delle canzonicite-ref-brunialti-3-0[3] e il cantante e bassista Tony Hooper.cite-ref-cr-2-1[2] Dopo l'arrivo del mandolinista Arthur Phillips, rimasto brevemente nel gruppo, entrarono nel complesso il bassista Ron Chesterman e la cantante di mwlwSandy Denny e si ribattezzarono Strawbs.cite-ref-cr-2-2[2]

Il gruppo esordì nel 1969 con l'album folk mwnqmwngStrawbs. Nel frattempo, Denny e Chesterman abbandonarono il gruppo; subentrarono il tastierista mwnwRick Wakeman e gli ex membri degli Elmer Gantry's Velvet Opera mwoqRichard Hudson (detto "Hud") e John Ford.cite-ref-cr-2-3[2]

A partire da mwwwmwxaGrave New World del 1972, primo album di successo degli Strawbs (giunse all'undicesima posizione della classifica britannica) il gruppo si allontanerà sempre più dal folk delle origini per abbracciare sonorità magniloquenti e sinfoniche.cite-ref-cr-2-7[2]cite-ref-pr-4-1[4] In seguito, Hooper venne sostituito dall'ex Fire Dave Lambert.cite-ref-cr-2-8[2] Nel 1973, venne edito il quinto album in studio mwawmwbaBursting at the Seams, contenente il singolo mwbqPart of the Union (entrambi giunti al secondo posto delle classifiche britanniche), e si assistette alla dipartita degli Hudson e Ford (formeranno il duo Hudson Ford e i Monks).cite-ref-cr-2-9[2]cite-ref-pr-4-2[4]

Rimasto l'unico membro della formazione originale, Cousins riformò il gruppo con John Hawken (che suonò anche nei mwegNashville Teens, mwewRenaissance, mwfaSpooky Tooth, e nei Vinegar Joe, Chas Cronk e Rod Coombes (già membro degli mwgaStealers Wheel e i mwgqJuicy Lucy).cite-ref-cr-2-10[2] La nuova fase, inaugurata con gli album del 1974 mwhgmwhwHero and Heroine e mwiamwiqGhosts, è caratterizzata da un più accessibile folk pop che ottiene inizialmente riscontri commerciali più positivi da parte del pubblico statunitense rispetto a quello britannico.cite-ref-cr-2-11[2] Negli anni seguenti, la popolarità degli Strawbs verrà sempre meno e si assisterà a ulteriori cambi di formazione.cite-ref-cr-2-12[2]
